Coaching Philosophy

Greg Holker

Technical Director

Welcome!

Thank you for your interest in becoming a BV United Coach. This is an incredible opportunity for you to grow and expand your coaching and leadership skills as well as be a part of a fun and dedicated community.

COACHING PHILOSOPHY

We believe that the more educated we are as coaches, the better we will be able to teach our players. Because of this, we encourage continuing education and will frequently distribute brief educational articles and materials to our coaching staff. This way, we blend our coaching styles to better reflect the BV United values.

At BVU, we aim to create opportunities for players to make decisions on their own and to support them through positive reinforcement. We won't tell them what to do in games, but we will ask them questions that will help them solve problems.  We will catch them being good and celebrate that!

Our coaches share common language so that there is fluidity between the teams as children move up, down, sideways, etc. across the club. Our systems of play from 7v7 to 9v9 to 11v11 are progressive and designed to celebrate a possession style of soccer so that we elevate soccer IQ and problem solving skills.

Like the players and parents, coaches are constantly reflecting and learning from each experience. Our aim is to provide a safe, challenging, and enjoyable experience for each child in the club. We strive to continue growing in our own development to make that experience as meaningful as possible.

EXAMPLE

The graphic at the right illustrates how we play at BV United. We expect our coaches and coaching assistants to understand the numbering system and implement with all players, regardless of age or level. Below, is our system of play for all teams in a progression by age:

  • U10:  1-3-2-1
  • U12:  1-3-2-3
  • U13+:  1-4-3-3
